一般情況下，柴油機燒瓦時會出現冒白煙現象。軸瓦燒蝕以后，柴油機運轉會發出金屬撞擊異響聲.嚴重時，曲軸與軸瓦燒蝕抱死在一起而無法轉動。

曲軸燒蝕的主要原因如下:

(1)機油容量不足。柴油機正常工作機油容量，應按機油標尺刻線規定隨時檢查添加，若機油容量較少，機油吸油盤吸收容量將受到影響，從而影響柴油機機油的供應。

(2)機油壓力較低。柴油機正常工作機油壓力為294kPa--588kPa，當機油壓力略低于294kPa(不低于245kPa)時，只要柴油機機油容量在規定上限(機油標尺上刻線)，由于機油飛濺效果好，柴油機尚能維持正常工作，反之，若機油壓力低于294kPa，機油容量處于規定下限，則柴油機極易出現燒瓦。

(3)軸瓦與軸頸配合間隙過大或過小。間隙過大(超過極限值):故障一般發生在新機或大修后柴油機投人使用時間較長。機油壓力腔不能形成，機油壓力降低。間隙過小:故障常發生在新機或大修后柴油機。

(4)曲軸軸頸或氣缸體主軸承孔，幾何尺寸或形狀尺寸超差和曲軸連桿軸頸夾角分度不勻。都會使曲軸軸頸與軸瓦配合間隙較小，潤滑油膜難以形成。
